Essential Documents For Studying in Canada: A Complete Checklist

Studying in Canada is appealing to international students for many reasons, such as its top-notch educational system, friendly culture, close proximity to breathtaking natural places, and much more. For many, studying in Canada is the best way to start the process of becoming a permanent resident.

Whether you are just starting to plan your study abroad or have already been accepted into a post-secondary institution in Canada, it is never too early to start considering and crossing off these prerequisites for starting as an international student in Canada.

A Valid passport

Traveling overseas requires a passport. If you don’t already have one, apply for a passport in the nation where you were born. If you do have a passport, be sure to check the expiration date because you are not allowed to travel overseas if it is in six months or less.

If you hold any official government identity from your home country, you should bring it or a duplicate of it.

This could include:

  • Certificate of Birth
  • A valid driver’s license

Once you are in Canada, it is your responsibility to ensure that your passport is valid. If you need to renew or extend your passport while you are in Canada, you must contact the consulate or embassy of your home country.

A letter of acceptance

In the event that you are accepted into a certain Canadian college or institution, you will receive an acceptance letter. Oftentimes, a letter of acceptance is called an offer letter or an acceptance letter. You will need to provide your admission letter in order to be granted a study visa.

Letters of conditional acceptance may also be taken into consideration. This suggests that the candidate has specific requirements to meet before beginning their major course of study. Typically, prerequisites include completing education in either French or English as a Second Language (ESL).

A financial plan or Funds Evidence Proof

To be granted a study visa, you will need to show that you can adequately support yourself, paying for both your tuition and additional living expenses. We call this proof of financial assistance.

Every international student must provide proof that they make at least $10,000 CAD ($833 CAD) each month, or more if they want to bring family members.

There are several methods for demonstrating financial support:

  • If you have transferred funds to Canada, documentation of a Canadian bank account in your name
  • A Canadian financial institution that is a participant and offers Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs)
  • Evidence of a bank student loan or education loan
  • Your last four-month period of bank statements
  • A draft from a bank convertible into Canadian dollars
  • Evidence that you have paid your housing and tuition
  • A letter from the person who gave the money or the institution providing the funds Evidence of funding from within Canada, if you are receiving a scholarship or are enrolled in a program financed by the government of Canada

Canada study permit

If one wants to study in Canada, one must submit their study permission, which costs about $ 150 CAD. In addition, you need a SOP or letter of explanation. The immigration officer will gain a better understanding of you and your goals from this letter. It makes clear why you chose Canada as your study location, illustrates how the program will help you achieve your career goals and indicates to the officer that you understand your academic responsibilities.

A custodian declaration (for minors only): The Custodianship Declaration form must be submitted with your application if you are a minor studying in Canada and you will need a custodian. It consists of two pages that you need to provide with your study permit application after having it notarized (confirmed by a notary).

Other documents: All documents indicated and specified on the document checklist by your local visa office must be included in the application.

An Immigration Medical Exam

Get a copy of your medical and immunization records from your doctor’s office before you leave the home. Make a note of any continuing medical issues or medicines so you can keep up with your care after you arrive in Canada to begin your studies. In the event that you require medical assistance while attending school, a lot of Canadian institutions maintain a clinic on or near campus.

A Canadian bank account

You will need a bank account after you get to Canada for all of your financial needs, including transfers and deposits made from home.

Upon opening a student bank account, the following paperwork must be submitted to the bank:

  • Your identity document
  • The Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or the Student Permit
  • Evidence of enrollment (available from your university; optional but preferred)
  • Proof of residency or a Social Insurance Number (SIN) (optional, but encouraged)
